Plenary session: Building a sustainable future - a new paradigm for structural engineering

As sculptors of our built environment, we must consider an important question – what is the new paradigm for structural engineering to deliver a more sustainable future? Join Arup’s Dr Joseph Correnza, Principal and structural engineer, to reflect on this concept.

In his presentation, Dr Correnza will briefly touch on the history and celebration of structures; the changing focus of the structural engineering profession and its industry partnerships and the fundamental principles founding capability. He will also explore the importance of future learning in shaping an increased breadth of skills, partnerships and applications and address how structural engineers play a part in responding to the challenges facing our society.

Headshot of Tanya de Hoog MIEAust
Tanya de Hoog FIStructE CEng MIEAust
President, The Institution of Structural Engineers

Tanya de Hoog possesses a wealth of structural engineering design experience, accumulated across Europe, the US, Middle East, Southeast Asia and Australia. Her project portfolio encompasses a wide spectrum, ranging from world-class stadia and long span roofs to residential structures. In 2006, Tanya co-founded the London office of the US engineering firm Thornton Tomasetti.

In 2019, she embarked on a new chapter in New York, spearheading a social impact initiative. This initiative mirrors her conviction in the influential role of engineering in addressing some of the world's most pressing challenges, centered around people and the planet.

In addition to her active involvement with IStructE since 2014, Tanya has played a proactive role in collaborative endeavours across the industry. This includes thought leadership, industry presentations, co-chairing the AIANY Social Science and Architecture Committee, and serving as a founding steering group member of The Equilibrium Network. The latter organisation collaborates with various built environment entities to promote equal influence for women in the design and delivery of projects.

Head of the Institute of Structural Design, University of Stuttgart

Ulrike Kuhlmann is Professor for Steel, Timber and Composite structures and Head of the Institute of Structural Design at University of Stuttgart (Germany), joining in 1995 after seven years of industrial experience. Professor Kuhlmann received her PhD from Ruhr University Bochum. Since 1998, she has been a partner at the consulting office Kuhlmann-Gerold-Zipperlen.

As a member in numerous expert committees, Professor Kuhlmann is actively involved in European standardisation work and was the Chair of TC250/SC3 Steel Structures from 2009 to 2022. Her research includes investigations on subjects as stability, fatigue and on all kinds of joints and connections with a focus on bridge design.

Plenary session: Design of high-strength and ultra high-strangth steels in the frame of Eurocode 3

Whenever even higher-strength steels were developed, there were doubts about their cost-effectiveness and usability. However, the development from S355 to S460 and finally to S700 has shown that this innovation paid off in a very short time. In terms of sustainability, the use of ultra-high strength steel up to S960 can save resources, make connections more efficient and extend the service life of bridges. This keynote presents results from various research projects carried out at the University of Stuttgart, Germany and shows where high and ultra-high strength steels can be used in the frame of the revised Eurocode 3.
